The freedom of two wheels

The second discipline

The second discipline in Triathlon is cycling because in a race it comes after swimming and before a run.  It is arguably the most enjoyable discipline because it enables you to experience the freedom of the open road.  You are usually riding a piece of kit (the bike) that you have spent time deliberating whether to buy.  Endlessly adjusting it and configuring the set up then becomes a key activity. The aim is to create the best fit for the road for that perfect ride experience.

Don’t be put off

Just like swimming and running, most people have some apprehensions about riding a bike. This is especially true on a road bike with their funny drop handlebars and sitting posture. It can all look a bit uncomfortable at first.  Don’t let this put you off.  I haven’t met anyone that wanted to give cycling a go, who has regretted taking to two wheels.  In the end, they all experience the fun, fitness, and rewards of cycling.  They learn to balance, ride safely and experience places and views that you just can’t get from being inside a car or on foot; this is the joy of being on two wheels.

Seek out experiences

In these posts, I hope to bring you some of my experiences of life in the saddle and provide some encouragement to people who are thinking about giving it a go. If you decide to take it further and commit to giving a Triathlon a try then that will be brilliant.

Thanks for this Mark. I’m one of those people who is reluctant to get back on the bike (after a less than positive Coast-to-Coast experience a few years ago it put me off cycling completely)! I’m looking forward to gaining some insights and inspiration from your journey and who knows….. Good luck with the training.
